Biography
Dorothy
P. Craig
has over 35 years of professional editorial experience.
Early training as a newspaper reporter established
lifelong skills in rapidly assembling details
on many topics, translating various kinds of jargon
for a general audience, and working under pressure
of deadlines. She uses these skills to help public
agencies, nonprofits, and businesses to communicate
complicated information to decision-makers, employees,
citizens, and customers. She specializes in developmental
editing and copyediting of complex documents where
organization and editorial consistency are particularly
important.
Dorothy is particularly interested in the interplay between the environmental, socio-economic, and political aspects of any given issue and the long-term and/or global implications. Through her work as an editorial consultant for the City of Seattle, City of Olympia, State of Washington, and many other public and private clients, she has become familiar with subjects ranging from surface water and groundwater protection, solid waste management, ecosystem management, climate change and environmental regulations to community mental health, community development, program planning and non-profit organization management. When required, she assembles a team of associates with the necessary skills and experience for a specific project.
Dorothy
has extensive experience in public policy and
program development, both as an editor and as
a consultant or employee for local government
agencies. She spent four years as a full-time
consultant with the City of Olympia (Washington)
public works department, developing innovative
programs and policies related to water resources,
sustainable community, and global climate change.
For several years she worked for the planning
and community development department in King County,
Washington, providing planning assistance to small
rural towns, and managing federal grant contracts
with suburban jurisdictions. In the early 1970's
she helped develop a comprehensive network of
community mental health services in the rapidly
growing urban county north of Detroit, Michigan.
Dorothy
has also been active as a founder, volunteer,
or employee with several not-for-profit organizations.
In 1991, she co-founded the Sustainable
Community Roundtable in South Puget Sound,
one of the nation's first grassroots organizations
promoting the vision and principles of sustainability
- the Roundtable pioneered the development of
citizen-initiated indicators of sustainability.
Until 2000, she coordinated activities of the
Roundtable and was actively involved in sustainable
community regional and national networking.
She
spent several years as co-director of Children
of the Green Earth, promoting tree-planting partnerships
between children in North America and children
in deforested areas of India, Africa, and Latin
America. Her interest in grassroots community
development led to two month-long trips to India
in 1986 and 2000, traveling alone or with friends
to visit innovative community projects in remote
villages and crowded cities.
She
was employed part time by the North American office
of the Sufi
Order International, assisting with major
organizational development activities such as
strategic planning and fundraising; supporting
the board of trustees, volunteer committees, and
emerging regional leadership councils; and developing
new bylaws, policies and procedures.
Dorothy
began her editorial career as a journalist,
serving as editor of her junior high, high school,
and college newspapers. After graduating from
Allegheny College with honors in history, she
worked professionally as a reporter, feature writer,
and copyeditor, covering farm news for the Somerset
Daily American in rural western Pennsylvania,
and the war on poverty, race relations, and the
anti-war movement for the Macomb Daily in suburban
Detroit during the 1960's. She has a master's
degree in social work policy and administration
from the University of Michigan.
